Season
The park stays open and the northern sites are diveable year-round from Labuan Bajo. The 'limited' months reflect the south: Dec-Feb monsoon swell makes the southern sites and the crossing to them unreliable, and liveaboard itineraries…
Why dive here

Genuinely the product here, not a hazard to tolerate. Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, Batu Bolong and The Cauldron are dived specifically because the current stacks fish on the upcurrent side. Reef hooks are standard.

Karang Makassar ('Manta Point') in the middle of the park and Manta Alley in the south. Feeding rather than cleaning behaviour at Manta Alley, in cold green water, which is a very different experience from the clear-water cleaning stations people picture.

Surprise relative to the headline: Komodo is sold on dragons, drift and mantas, and almost nobody books it for macro. The cold upwelling sites in the south (Cannibal Rock, Yellow Wall, Torpedo Alley) are a serious critter destination with frogfish,…
Marine life
Present year-round in the park; concentrations reported strongest Dec-Feb in the south when plankton density peaks. That is also the roughest time to reach the southern sites, which is the trade…
Holding in current on the northern pinnacles, particularly Castle Rock and Crystal Rock.
