Baja California Sur, Mexico
Small no-take marine park on the east cape of Baja holding the only living coral reef in the Gulf of California, and the most documented case of fish biomass recovery inside a protected area anywhere.

Season
Year-round diving with no closure. The constraint is permit capacity: roughly two dive groups per site per day, with El Vencedor allocated by weekly lottery. Both sources agree Aug-Dec gives the warmest water (27-30C) and best visibility…
Why dive here

The actual story, and the one that gets skipped. The reef was fished out before 1995 protection; research covering 1999-2009 documented a 463% increase in total fish biomass with top predators up roughly elevenfold, the largest recovery measured in any marine…

Dense tornado schools of bigeye jack, plus grouper and snapper aggregations that exist here specifically because nobody is allowed to fish them. The visual density is the direct product of the protection.

CONTRADICTION. Reliable at the El Vencedor wreck, but the two sources disagree sharply on when: ZuBlu gives a Feb-Jun peak, Divearoo gives bull sharks year-round with peak reliability Aug-Dec. Encoded as present year-round with no confident peak. Unbaited…

Marine life
Sources contradict: ZuBlu gives Feb-Jun peak, Divearoo gives year-round with Aug-Dec most reliable. Encoded flat rather than picking a side. Unbaited. See OQ-30.
Present, though the dedicated sea lion colony diving in this region is at Los Islotes near La Paz rather than here.
Present in the Gulf; the large aggregations and breaching behaviour are a La Paz product rather than a Cabo Pulmo one. Sources do not give a Cabo Pulmo-specific season.
Occasional in winter months. The reliable Gulf of California whale shark product is in La Paz bay, and it is a snorkel activity.
Jan-Mar in the Gulf. Surface and acoustic, not an in-water product.
