Open year-round. Jun-Sep is the southwest monsoon with more rain, wind and reduced visibility, and the western sites blow out, so those read 'limited'. The whale sharks are there regardless; the diving around them is just less pleasant.

    01pelagic

    Resident whale sharks

The distinguishing claim, and it is the opposite of the usual whale shark story. Along Maamigili reef inside the South Ari MPA the animals are present year-round with near-daily sightings, not seasonal. Contrast Hanifaru in Baa Atoll, where whale sharks are a…

  2. Reef mantas at Madivaru — diving at South Ari Atoll
    02pelagic

    Reef mantas at Madivaru

Dec-May, on the south side of Rangali Kandu. Monsoon-driven: cleaning stations activate on whichever side of the atoll is downcurrent of the prevailing wind, so the productive side flips through the year.

Warm, 5-30m, and much of it is genuinely beginner-friendly. Channel dives are drift dives with real current and are the step up. The whale shark encounters happen shallow along the reef edge, often with heavy boat traffic overhead, so…
